April 2026
HHS Parents:
I am writing to share an important update regarding our science program at Hockinson High School. Beginning next school year, we will be implementing a revised science curriculum and course progression designed to better support student learning and long-term success. Families can view a summary of the science course progression changes on our website.
This change represents a meaningful shift from our current model. After careful review, collaboration, and planning, we believe this is the right step forward for our students.
Our goal is simple: To ensure that every Hockinson student is well prepared for future opportunities, whether that be college, technical training, or careers in STEM fields. The updated curriculum more closely aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which emphasize critical thinking, real world application, and deeper understanding of scientific concepts.
There are several key reasons for this transition:
Stronger preparation for post-high school pathways: The new sequence is designed to better equip students for college level science and STEM related careers.
Improved alignment with state standards and assessments: Students will be more intentionally prepared for Washington state science assessments (WCAS) in their Junior year of high school.
Access to high quality instructional materials: Unlike our current model, this curriculum includes established, research-based resources and textbooks that support both teaching and learning.
Greater consistency and support for teachers: This shift reduces the need for teachers to create materials from scratch, allowing them to focus more on engaging students and supporting individual learning needs.
This work has been a true team effort. I want to thank our Hockinson High School science department, along with Jennifer Sawyer, our Teaching and Learning Coordinator, and Josh Robertson, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Educational Services, for their leadership and collaboration throughout this process.
We understand that changes like this can bring questions. In the coming weeks, we will share more detailed information about course pathways and what this means for current and future students. Our commitment is to ensure a smooth transition and to support every student along the way.
Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. We are excited about the opportunities this updated progression will create for our students here at Hockinson High School.
Sincerely,
Tim Fox, HHS Principal
