In response to parent concerns about secondary students’ access to websites such as YouTube during the school day and after school, the HSD has developed a plan to maximize the use of Chromebooks for educational purposes.
Beginning January 26, 2026, HSD parents can sign up for web-filtering through the HSD's Parent Portal. The registration form is linked HERE. Once registered, parents will receive an email with information on how to access the portal and select from a menu of preferences for their student's tech use (eg, websites such as YouTube that they would like to restrict).
Next fall, after HSD teachers move from Schoology to Google Classroom as their learning management system, students will only be able to access YouTube videos approved by teachers. These links will be made available on the Google Classroom platform. Students will no longer be able to access YouTube videos recreationally. While this change may not be popular with students, it's consistent with the HSD's commitment to ensuring that Chromebooks are used for educational purposes. Web-filtering, student wellness/safety monitoring, and teacher supervision software is already in place. This latest move helps to limit student access to potentially inappropriate videos all day, not only during school hours.
