Dear Parents,
We are 48 days into the 2025-26 school year and that has given us enough time to collect some data to share - and everyone loves a data report, right?
I know people have different reactions to numbers, but this numbers-based summary gives us a different way of capturing some of the many accomplishments of Hockinson School District students, staff, and supporters so far this school year.
I want to be sure to preface this report with three disclaimers:
It’s random. It covers an array of programs, events, and topics.
It’s HHS-heavy. Comprehensive high schools have a lot of built-in metrics. So, although we try to shine a light on our district K-12, it still comes across as HHS-centric.
Finally, it comes across a little bit like a brag sheet. We make it a point to celebrate, but we try not to toot our own horn. This list, however, contains a lot of numbers related to student achievements, so I am left with one thing to say before you review this roll call of HSD numbers: Honk, honk!
2,065
HSD enrollment as of October 2025, approximately:
648 HHS, 479 HMS, and 922 HHES
16 Hockinson Virtual Academy
4
AmeriCorps members (via Washington Reading Corps) who are serving our students as Student Learning Advocates this school year! We will introduce these young service-minded citizens in a HSD News Round-Up soon.
685
Total number of College in the High School courses that will be taken by HHS students in Fall Semester 2025 and Spring Semester 2026.
76
Number of university credits HHS students can earn through the school’s College in the High School program.
$0
Cost to students. This state-supported program is made possible by a partnership with Central Washington University (CWU) and HHS teachers who qualify as adjunct professors.
$157.80
Per credit cost (tuition only) for a full-time student attending CWU.
$745
Total per credit cost of attending CWU, including fees, textbooks, food, and housing. So a student who takes all 76 credits in Hockinson v. in Ellensburg would save $56,684!
3
National Merit Commended Scholars. To qualify for this distinction, students must have taken the PSAT (which HHS and AAA Boosters provide to our students) and you must score in the top 3-5% out of over 1 million PSAT 11th grade test takers nationwide.
1.38
millions of dollars in interest payments saved over the next ten years by refinancing the 2015 General Obligation Bonds. These reduced payments translate to a lower tax rate for HSD homeowners.
37
Percentage of HHS students who participated in a Fall Sport (Football, Boys & Girls Cross Country, Cheer, Soccer, Boys Golf, Girls Swim, Volleyball, Boys Tennis).
59
HHES students involved in after-school Volleyball, Lego, and Salmon Clubs.
223
Number of students participating in a HHS Club/Activity such as Mock Trial, Drama Club, Environmental Club, Future Business Leaders of America and more!
316

1,236
Total number of HSD students involved in Music when you add in HHES.
32-5
Combined win-loss records of HMS Volleyball and Football Teams this past season.
2
Two league championships claimed by HMS Girls and Boys Cross Country. The boys team has won three straight league titles.
0, 0, 0
Our three school kitchens had another clean sweep with their Spring 2025 county health inspection scores. A zero is a perfect score in the health department’s scoring system.
54
Ready for this? HHES, HMS and HHS kitchens have maintained perfect scores dating back to 2016. 9 years, 2 inspections a year, at 3 schools = 54 inspections without any health violations!
90.6
Average percentile of HSD’s Smarter Balance Assessment performance over the past 5 years, which is the mathematical way of saying HSD students have collectively performed better than 90% of other Washington school districts.
57
HSD students who were involved in the fall play the Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon as either a member of the cast or crew
11
Number of HSD multilingual learners - students with a primary or home language other than English who are in the process of acquiring English - who showed proficiency on the Spring 2025 WIDA Language Proficiency, a standardized measurement of English skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and comprehension.
36
Numbers of HSD multilingual learners who have passed the WIDA since 2021.
52,000

20
Number of graduating classes in HHS history. The Class of 2026 is #21.
OK, we've reached the end...until winter. At this point, it’s important to include my usual disclaimer: This list is incomplete. It only reflects a sample of what is happening in our schools. As mentioned above, we have 2,065 students in the HSD and each one is a story to tell. Additionally, it is important to remember the people behind these numbers: Our staff, families, and community - the collective heart of the HSD.
So, let’s finish with a big “Thank You” to everyone who makes Hockinson a special place to live and the HSD a special place to learn. Your support lifts our students to higher and higher levels of achievement and helps us pursue our mission of preparing all Hockinson students for lifelong success.
