Today’s Facility Friday has an emotional storyline that includes surprise, disappointment, and ultimately happiness because it was resolved without negatively impacting the HSD’s finances and its services to students.
The surprise: Two projects that were completed as part of the HSD’s 2015 Bond quickly fell into disrepair, requiring replacement. The flat roofs on both the school’s fieldhouse and music room showed excessive wear even though they were only 7 years old.
The disappointment: HSD Operations Supervisor Dave Wilson was frustrated by this turn of events as he was counting on the roof to last at least twice that long. “We knew we needed to repair and replace some of the roofs on our schools and district buildings. Those roofs are much older…20 or more years old. We were not counting on some of our newest roofs to fail,” said Wilson.
Happiness: Fortunately, there was a happy ending. Wilson found the original project warranty, which the contractor honored. The roof was replaced at no cost to the district or Hockinson taxpayers! Wilson said he experienced a mixture of relief and gratitude when he saw the new roof. “With everything being so high [equipment and supply prices], I was so happy that the roofing company fixed the roof under warranty. They were responsive and did a quality job,” said Wilson.
This episode illustrates the HSD’s commitment to ensuring that the exterior of our buildings are safe and well-maintained so we can protect both the community’s investment in our capital assets and the learning environment inside our schools.
