HHS Seniors raising funds for motorized flag

A proud display of the stars and stripes is a longstanding tradition in Hockinson. In fact, when the state first entered the Union in 1889, local residents wanted to demonstrate their patriotism and purchased silk in San Francisco to make a flag. What they produced a year later was a 9’ x 15’ flag that flew over the school house for more than a decade (see image story below).

130 years since the creation of that flag, the HHS Class of 2020 would like to add a new chapter to the storied relationship of the nation’s colors and Hockinson schools. As a “Senior Gift,” the Class is raising funds to purchase a 12’ x 18’ motorized American flag for Hockinson High School. With the ability to drop down and retract at the push of a button, the flag will be located in the Gymnasium for all to admire.

“Due to the statewide school closure, we as Seniors will miss out on many exciting school activities we have been looking forward to since our freshman year: Color War, Mr. Hockinson, our Senior Prom, etc. We are sad that we will miss out on events like these that create lifelong memories,” said Kinard Haden, Senior Activities Coordinator for the Class of 2020. “However, we are grateful for HHS and all that it has taught us. The 2020 Senior Class is excited to give back to HHS in the form of a Senior Gift.”

As of late April, the Class has raised approximately $2,100 toward the purchase of the gift, with another $1,700 to go. Previous class gifts have included HHS hawk flags, mats, a wall mural and a mascot costume.

“It would be excellent if you could donate $20 to honor our Class of 2020, but we know that our community and country are struggling economically,” said Haden. “Any donation would be greatly appreciated. We hope to make this the best senior gift HHS has ever seen and the perfect send off for our 2020 class.”

Those wishing to donate can do so by visiting https://wa-hockinson-lite.intouchreceipting.com and selecting “Hockinson High School” from the school menu and “Class of 2020 Flag Donation” from the item menu. Donations can also be mailed to: HHS 16819 NE 159th St, Brush Prairie, WA 98606.
