A Hockinson High School staff member and community volunteer have been recognized by a regional business group for their outstanding commitment to students in Hockinson.

Eirik Huset, HHS wood tech teacher/ district maintenance team member, and Julie Atchley, president of the Hockinson High School Boosters, were among 23 individuals honored on Thursday, October 17 as part of the “Learn Here Project.” Presented by the non-profit business leaders’ group Identity Clark County, the project showcases Clark County’s educational system and its leaders in an effort to inspire others and attract people and businesses to the region.

“We are so appreciative by those who work so diligently in preparing our students,” said Chad Sessions, co-owner of Real Living, The Real Estate Group and an Identity Clark County board member, in a press release. “Through their hard work and creativity, they are helping prepare our next generation of citizens, workers and leaders, which in turn, helps us grow our economy and community.”

In recognizing Huset, the group wrote the following message:

"The Hockinson School District steadily and strategically made building investments throughout the district over the past several yeas including the completion of a new school which is already actively preparing students for tomorrow's opportunities today. For energetically enhancing district-wide facilities through thoughtful and creative cost-saving solutions, we thank Eirik Huset ... Whether as a champion for up-cycling projects like the installation of a new reception desk built from re-purposed wood shop maple wood butcher blocks, or as lead on remodeling projects that are always sure to include a fresh splash of "Hockinson blue" paint, Eirik guarantees the history and heritage of his community is at the forefront of each improvement. He combines professional skills from years in the construction industry with a motivating demeanor drawn from coaching many seasons of basketball, frequently reminding each new generation to slow down and take pride in challenging work. Thanks, Eirik."

In recognizing Atchley, the group wrote:

"Hockinson High School is known for high-ranking academic achievements and impressive graduation rates topping 94 percent, and is home to thriving athletics and after-school activities. The secret? A collaborative school culture that works in active partnership with its community for the success of all students. Taking that principle to heart, the Hockinson High School Booster Club leads by example. As club president, Julie Atchley helps the group drum up a broad base of support for students and programs through engaging community and fundraising opportunities. Annual events like Hockinson Fundays -- a community-wide celebration with exciting parades and carnival games -- has become a multi-generational tradition the entire town eagerly anticipates. From holiday bazaars to booster auctions, Julie's leadership ensures event venues burst at the seams, banquet tables overflow with sponsor donations, and under her direction, yearly financial revenues have quadrupled. But of all these achievements, it's her auction dessert dash that really takes the cake. Julie's hard work and dedication is emblematic of an educational hero at work. Thank you, Julie. Go Hawks!"
