HSD Looking for Volunteers to Support Farm-to-School Program

Berries

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Hockinson community volunteers are invited to pick blueberries that will be used in healthy breakfast and lunch offerings for HSD students during the 2022-23 school year.

This opportunity, courtesy of Majestic Farms, is a continuation of a commitment by Hockinson Schools and Chartwells Food Service to not only educate students about healthy foods, but also support local agriculture and increase access to locally-sourced food in schools.

Here is how it works:

  • U-pick blueberries are available at Majestic Farms: 18500 NE 182nd Ave. Brush Prairie, WA 98606.

  • Volunteers pick berries between 8 am - 5 pm on Friday 8/12, Saturday 8/13, and Sunday 8/14. It is up to every volunteer how much time they spend picking - 15 minutes, an hour, or more.

  • When picking up a bucket at the berry stand, volunteers inform workers that they are picking berries for HSD students.

  • Return the bucket and berries to the stand when done.

  • Joshua Brown-Silva, HSD Nutrition Services Director, will pick up the donated berries every day and make sure they are washed and frozen so they are ready to be used in a variety of breakfast and lunch offerings in the coming school year, including: Fruit smoothies, blueberry muffins, fruit and yogurt parfaits and more!

That’s it! Majestic Farms donates the berries, you donate your time, and our students benefit.

Thank you for supporting our local farms and our local learners!
