HSD schools have been closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. The closure is part of a statewide mandate announced by Governor Inslee during a press conference on Monday afternoon (April 6). It is the latest step in the ongoing effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our region safe and healthy.
The district understands that the continued closure of schools presents many challenges for students and families. It also raises many questions. The information outlined below is what we know now. The district will continue to share further guidance as decisions are made and as information becomes available:
- Distance Learning: HSD schools are beginning at-home learning programs this week. These programs will continue through the remainder of the school year. Families can expect more communication from their student’s principal and teacher(s) in the days ahead and throughout the rest of the school year.
- Technology: Students in need of a device or tech support to access at-home learning should contact techsupport@hocksd.org. The district has a limited number of iPads available that will be provided based on need with preference given to 5th and 4th Grade students.
- Nutrition Services: Free breakfast and lunch service will be provided to students during this school closure. Meals may be picked up at Hockinson High School between 10 a.m. and Noon Monday-Friday in the bus turnaround at HHS (16819 NE 159th St, Brush Prairie, WA 98606).
- Child Care: The HSD will provide child care for children of first responders, health care and grocery workers. Register by contacting Charity Schadt at charity.schadt@hocksd.org
- HHS Seniors: HHS Seniors will receive support from counselors and administrators on opportunities to earn credits needed for post-secondary transitions. The district is working closely with the state’s college system to ensure smooth transitions.
- Graduation Ceremonies: HHS Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 11. While the format that will be used for the ceremony is unknown at this time, the district intends to honor this date. More information will be sent out once details are finalized about this important community event.
- School Activities: All school events (including sports practices and contests, field trips, dances, etc.) scheduled between now and the end of the school year are canceled. The district will be engaging with students and parents to come up with creative alternatives to celebrate milestones such as prom and field day. Students and families will be updated on these decisions so that they can plan their participation in advance.
- Summer School: The district is awaiting information from Governor Inslee on whether school facilities will be open to provide school over the summer.

"As the Governor shared at today's press conference, the residents of our state have reduced the number of COVID infections by following 'Stay at Home' guidelines," wrote HSD Superintendent Steve Marshall, in a letter to families on Monday. "Unfortunately, this health risk persists. Please continue to take good care of yourselves and your families. This is a difficult time for all of us, but I encourage you to stay home, stay healthy, and stay positive."
