SENATE BILL 5395

Per Senate Bill 5395, which requires that all Washington public schools provide comprehensive sexual health education (CSHE) instruction that meets state standards, the HSD must select a new CSHE curriculum for use across the district, which will be phased in over the next two years. The new curriculum must be:

  • medically and scientifically accurate;

  • evidence-informed and age-appropriate;

  • aligned with health and learning standards; and

  • inclusive of all students regardless of their protected class status.

The bill defines comprehensive sexual health education as recurring instruction in human development and reproduction that is age-appropriate and inclusive of all students. There is no sexual health content required for students in grades K–3. For these younger grades, the curriculum content is focused on social-emotional learning. As has always been the case, parents and guardians have the right to opt their children out of sexual health education instruction at any time

HSD INFORMATION

For the 2021-2022 school year, only HIV/AIDS will be taught from the newly adopted G-W Essential Health Skills and the Human Sexuality Accompanying textbook in grades 6-12.

To review the materials online, go to the curriculum bookshelf link and use the provided login information (see below). The online materials will be available until May 31st, 2022.

We will also be hosting a drop-in evening session on April 21st from 6:00-7:00 pm in the high school library. We will have several computers available to review the materials online. Hard copies of the textbooks will also be available for you to look at.

If you choose to opt your student out of the HIV/AIDS instruction, please fill out the appropriate opt-out waiver located under the Opt-out Waivers link. These students will receive an alternate assignment from their science or health teacher and will be supervised in a different location. A new waiver will need to be filled out each year. The dates of instruction are as follows:
